For Abel, homelessness wasn’t a choice – it was a harsh reality he never expected. After a relationship breakdown seven months ago, he went from staying in a hostel to sleeping rough, then a friend’s cold garage. His job ended, and depression set in. Support from local authorities fell short, leaving him feeling alone and stuck.
Then he connected with Crisis’ Skylight services, which are supported by funding from the TDS Charitable Foundation. Crisis assigned Abel a dedicated worker, who provided practical help: food bank vouchers, travel costs for viewings and assistance with setting up internet access and Universal Credit.
They searched tirelessly for affordable housing in Oxford, where rents are high, and finally, five months later, Abel found a shared home. Crisis covered his first month’s rent, deposit and essential items like a cooker.
Today, Abel is rebuilding his life. He’s working part-time in quality control, back at the gym and planning to return to personal training.
“People don’t choose to be homeless… They need a second chance and the right support.” Abel
Our partnership with Crisis has already helped 158 people end their homelessness in its first year. Not just through caseworkers helping people into homes, but also through Housing Access Specialists who support landlords to provide homes for people like Abel.
Especially around Christmas, homelessness services see increased demand. Check your local Skylight centre to donate funds or items for their Christmas centres or ask about volunteering opportunities.
You can offer immediate help to people who are rough sleeping, such as by asking them for their choice of food or hot drink or if they need other supplies like a warm coat or jumper.
Through stories like Abel’s, it’s clear that with the right support, a second chance isn’t just possible – it can change everything.
